Week 9

The previous generation has passed away. Aaron and Miriam have both died. Joshua has been chosen to replace Moses when Israel crosses into the Promised Land. Everything is ready. The day is finally at hand. But before this incredible (and difficult) new chapter in Israel begins, Moses the elderly prophet shares his last instructions, warnings, and blessings.

The Book of Deuteronomy is a sermon. In it, Moses runs through everything one more time. So if you’ve forgotten some of God’s promises, Israel’s history, or the laws of the Covenant, don’t worry. You can review it alongside the Israelites. But this review lesson is somehow different than the sometimes dry record of laws and instructions we’ve read before. You can feel the urgency in Moses’ voice as he urges Israel to remember their past, from the early beginnings in Abraham, to slavery in Egypt, to the Covenant at Mt. Sinai. From beginning to end he gives them a choice. They can choose obedience to God and enjoy all the blessings that come with it. Or they can disobey and suffer the consequences. The choice is theirs. The future is before them. Moses begs them, and us, to make the right choice.
Keep reading, and I’ll see you in the Bible!
