A QUICK LOOK BACK
Last week, we saw the glory of Creation go sour in a hurry. God had a real mess on God’s hands when it seemed everyone in the world had turned against God. How to fix it? God decided to start small, focusing on one man who would truly know God, love God, and trust God. God tested Abraham’s trust in some pretty shocking ways because God had to be sure that this family would work out. Covenant is challenging, but God is committed to it and is in for the long haul. Through this one man, and his imperfect family, God is going to turn the world around.
THE ROAD AHEAD
God and Abraham become close friends, but they were more than just friends. They made vows and promises to each other, kind of like marriage vows. In this covenant, God promised that Abraham would have a huge family that would eventually grow into a nation! God also promised to provide that nation with a place to live. This Promised Land would be a home of their very own. Remember those three promises: Friendship, Huge Family, and Land.
Will God keep these promises? Will the family grow larger with each generation? Will it ever become large enough to be a nation? Will God ever be able to bless the rest of the earth through this nation? As we read on this week, we will see God’s plan THREATENED at every turn. How can the family grow if wives are unable to conceive? How can it grow if it is torn apart by fighting and rivalry? This family is far from perfect! How can it survive when it is threatened by the nastiness of the people around them? What will happen when a drought leads to a severe famine? Will this Chosen Family starve to death with the rest of the world? And what about that Promised Land? Will they ever see it? Fasten your seatbelts, folks. This week is bound to be a bumpy ride!
Keep reading, and I’ll see you in the Bible!
