|A QUICK LOOK BACK|
Job has finally heard from God and is both humbled and restored. God is good after all, but God still won’t jump through hoops and do tricks just because we want God to. Remember God’s name given to Moses at the burning bush? It means “I AM WHAT I AM” or “I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE.” God will not be led around by the nose, but God is not unconcerned with us either. We see from this strange discussion between God and Satan that God has more confidence in us than we do in ourselves. As we read on, we will continue to let God down by being so very human. But keep your eyes open for those who come closer to living up to our potential!
THE ROAD AHEAD
One such man is Samuel. Yes, we are hopping around again. We will be doing a lot of that for quite some time to come as we read through the Bible in the historical order of these events, reading other writings (like Psalms) as they apply to the main story. Remember, the Bible is a library, a collection of writings held together by a single historical thread of God’s work in the world. We’re just going to keep rearranging this stuff by putting things where they will be most helpful in our coast to coast trip.
Samuel is the last judge. In many ways, Samuel is the greatest judge. His birth and calling into ministry are extraordinary. His ministry is difficult as he sees Israel reject God by choosing a king. Samuel will keep an eye on this new king, never letting King Saul forget that God is in charge. Samuel the judge becomes Samuel the prophet, the voice of reason in self-indulgent world. He is also the conscience for the kings who often lack one. Although asking for a king is a disobedient act, God makes the best of it, trying to introduce to the world truly godly kings. It doesn’t always work, as Saul and David are at each other’s throats! Remember, God works with what on hand! That includes Saul and David. That includes us, too!
Keep reading! I’ll see you in the Bible!
